Whither UMNO Youth?

What is the big difference between UMNO Youth, MIC Youth and MCA Youth? One thing in common is that they are fighting for the benefits and interests of their respective community. UMNO will fight for Malay, MIC for Indian and MCA for Chinese. If they fail or refuse to do that, then might as well they sit under one youth-wing only.

So when you fight for Malay, then automatically you will fight for Malay religion as well, which is Islam. So UMNO Youth must be at forefront to address any issue affecting the Malay and Islam. They must get there first, not wait for the other party to come and address the issue. They must show to UMNO members that they know their facts and mission. They cannot let PAS Youth do the talking for the Malay and they cannot let PAS Youth steal the thunder from them.

It is a tradition that UMNO Youth is a critical and radical wing of UMNO party when it comes to Malay issues. They will do whatever they can to protect and fight for the Malay interests. They would hold demonstration, protest and debate with any party who question the Malay rights and privileges. It had happened regularly during the time of their previous chiefs i.e. Sardon Jubir, Dato’ Harun, Syed Jaafar Albar, Dato’ Suhaimi, Anwar Ibrahim, Najib Tun Razak.

But now, thing has changed, thing has slowed down. No more venomous UMNO Youth. No more vocal and critical UMNO Youth. No more peaceful demonstration, protest and debate. It seems that UMNO Youth has lost its direction and purpose. What is happening? Why they left the battlefield when the war is still blazing?

Maybe our Dato’ Sri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein can shed some light to us. Maybe he can spend some time to ponder and think about those questions with us. He simply cannot say that at the present time, there is no pressing issue affecting the Malay community. He simply cannot say that the Malay community is doing and earning well despite the current price hikes of oil and electricity. He must say something smart but different from the current government. He must please the Malay community not someone else. Whether we like it or not, only 30% of the Malay community can be considered as middle class, the rest still live and depend on our government goodwill and subsidy.

Lately, there are several domestic and international issues which need immediate response from UMNO Youth. Among them are the ambiguous jurisdiction of our Syariah Court in the issue of apostasy and conversion of non-muslim, the controversial decree or fatwa from Majlis Ulama Malaysia as to kongsi-raya and sureheboh, the gender-biased provisos in the Islamic Family Law, the Inter-Faith group controversy, the liberal Malay in our society, the social problems of Malay youth etc. Internationally there are the Palestine issue, Iraq issue, Iran nuclear issues etc. UMNO Youth must let the Malay public know about their stand in those matters.

I wonder where have UMNO Youth gone? For sure, they cannot simply issue their statement and stand through their website only as not all Malay has accessed to it. I wish Dato’ Hishammuddin would do something about all that soon. Wassalam
