not sure, then ask someone!
Last week, one of my lawyer friends asked me, “hisyam, what the fuss is all about, what’s wrong with kongsi raya, why everybody suddenly castigates the Mufti and the majlis ulama statement”, “why some of our ministers are so frustrated with the statement”.
Actually the above questions are about the latest call from the majlis ulama malaysia for the government to review kongsi raya as it is haram or forbidden for muslim to celebrate any non-muslim festival or celebration.
As expected I have no immediate answers to the above questions. As a muslim, I have no choice but to listen and follow any decision made by the majlis ulama, because they are the expert and jurist of Islamic Law, because they are the successor @ waris of the Prophet s.a.w. and because I am not an expert to rebut their decision.
I referred the matter to my learned ustaz friend for some guidance, he advised me that in any complicated matter or problem, we as human being must refer the problem to an expert or jurist in the matter for a solution. For example if we are sick and do not know what is the cause of it, we have to see a qualified doctor or physician for a treatment; if we need to sort out our tax and accounting problems, we have to see a tax agent or accountant for solutions. Likewise, if we need legal advices, we have to see a lawyer or solicitor, not any tom-dick-n-harry. Needless to say, I got the point.
In short, he advised me that we cannot be expected to know everything, therefore we always need someone who has the necessary knowledge and qualification in certain matters. We cannot simply make our own decision on matters which we are not sure of. Otherwise we may end up in bigger trouble later or we may be getting nowhere.
Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to call upon all muslim in Malaysia not to make hasty comment or decision in respect of the latest call to review kongsi raya from the Majlis Ulama. Let us study the matter carefully first and refer the same to Islamic jurists in Islamic Law for a right solution. Please don’t question the decision without any supporting text and evidence from the sources of Islamic Law i.e. Quran & Hadith.
Whether we like or not, as long as we are a muslim, we are obligated to seek and know the truth only, nothing but the truth. Wassalam.
