court -vs- the prominent figures
currently malaysians are talking about the decision of the Court of Appeal in the case of metramac corporation. the judgment receives mixed-response from the public. some applaud it and some criticise it. either way it shows that the freedom of expression is very much alive in Malaysia, for now.
here, i would like to say a few words. first, the judgment is a good reminder to the public that besides the executive and the parliment/legislature, there is another organ of democracy in this country that needs our respect and our acknowledgment, it is the all powerful body of judiciary. through the judgment, the public now realise that the judiciary is alive and kicking-ass all the time. in any event, the judiciary is there to serve the public and to give them justice. obviously, everybody should be pro-judiciary.
second, since the removal of our former LP Tun Salleh Abbas, a large section of the public thinks that the judiciary is less powerful than the executive and the legislature, so the judiciary can be stepped aside at any time by the executive which is headed by the PM. we have to defeat this perception for the sake of our people and the country. there must be check and balance. absolute power corrupts absolutely.
therefore, i hope we can give a fair chance to the judiciary to let it grows back to the level where it once was, highly respected and honoured by everybody. please stop condemning the decision but defend it instead.
